Nominations have opened for the Cilip 125 List to recognise and honour a new generation of 125 librarians, information and knowledge management professionals who drive positive change in the industry.
The list will salute people in the first seven years of their professional life as a librarian, information or knowledge professional.
The list marks the 125th anniversary of Cilip’s Royal Charter, which was granted by Queen Victoria. At that time, Cilip was known as the Library Association. The charter was awarded for the association to “work for the benefit of the public to promote education and knowledge through the establishment and development of libraries and information services and to advance information science".
Nick Poole, Cilip c.e.o., said: “An enduring spirit of community has allowed our profession to weather the highs and lows of the past century and a quarter. Our profession has stood together through times of war and conflict—even in 1919, in the height of social revolt and with the spectre of a new world war on the horizon, our members were meeting to lobby government for the rights of working class people to read and access free public libraries.
“In 2023, our community once again faces a number of challenges—from the spectre of misinformation and disinformation to open challenges to intellectual freedom and attacks on Drag Queen Story Time events in public libraries, from the financial impact of public sector funding reductions to the need to protect ongoing access to specialist collections, knowledge, expertise and research.
“Cilip’s 125th anniversary provides us with a golden opportunity to take stock of the 125 years since the royal assent of our charter. It creates a moment for us to reflect on the people, moments, ideas and aspirations that have shaped our community since 1898.”
