Virago has appointed Clare Gordon from Head of Zeus as senior editor to cover publisher Sarah Savitt’s maternity leave.
Gordon will join Virago in March and will be responsible for editing and publishing Savitt’s list in her absence, with capacity to acquire new titles for the imprint. She will report to publishing director Anna Kelly
She has worked as an editor for Head of Zeus since 2019 and acquired books including Lọlá Ákínmádé Åkerström’s In Every Mirror She’s Black and Rion Amilcar Scott’s The World Doesn’t Require You. She moved to Head of Zeus editorial after two years as communications manager, when she led marketing and publicity across literary fiction, non-fiction and children’s, including for Sunday Times bestseller The Colour of Time.
Savitt commented: “Clare was really impressive at every stage of the interview process. She has worked on a wide range of exciting books at Head of Zeus and her commitment to feminism and championing underrepresented writers is inspiring. So I’m delighted she is joining Virago to look after my list while I’m on leave. I know she’s going to bring a huge amount of energy, fresh thinking and passion to every book she works on.”
Gordon said: “Over five years at Head of Zeus I’ve learnt so much from the brilliant publishing team and had the chance to work with extremely talented authors, but I’m ready and excited to be taking on a new adventure at Virago. It’s a dream to be joining an imprint that champions the feminist values that are so important in my professional and personal life. How lucky I am that such an impressive, intelligent, innovative team are welcoming me into their number, and that Sarah is trusting me to look after her incredible list while she is away. I can’t wait.”
