The Borough Press has made a series of promotions as it approaches its 10th birthday.
Suzie Dooré has decided to make permanent the editor-at-large role she has been in for the last 10 months as a result of her long Covid. This will allow her to focus more closely on her existing authors and on acquiring new titles, the publisher said.
Beth Coates becomes publisher after a year as publishing consultant in which she has “re-established a strong and cohesive editorial team and overseen a period of exciting and high-profile acquisitions” according to The Borough Press.
Amy Perkins is promoted to editorial director from commissioning editor. “In less than a year at HarperFiction, Amy has proven herself a hugely valuable member of the team, leading her publishing with passion and energy and acquiring some of our major lead titles for both 2024 and 2025” the publisher said. She will leave for parental leave in mid-March, and The Borough Press will be recruiting for a commissioning editor to cover her leave.
Deputy publishing director Ann Bissell returns from her adoption leave this week. She initially joined the publisher in a publicity role 11 years ago before moving into the editorial team in 2021. “In driving the enormous success of Bella Mackie’s How to Kill Your Family she has proven herself to be an exceptional publisher,” The Borough Press said.
Kate Elton, group managing director, adult commercial publishing, said: “Beth’s infectious passion for great writing, deep market knowledge, warmth and generosity as a colleague, and ambition for The Borough Press’ books and authors have made her a joy to work with. Alongside Suzie and the rest of the team she will continue the imprint expansion, which is a major focus for the HarperFiction division. The Borough Press’ editorial team are acquiring some wonderful new talent and are set to deliver some of the division’s big event books over the next couple of years — I’m very excited to see what the next decade holds.”
Coates added: “I’ve long admired The Borough Press as an imprint brimming with passion, publishing flair and wonderful books, and I have so enjoyed having the chance to be involved with it this past year. I can’t wait to be part of the next 10 with the full deck of Borough cards in place.”
