Comma Press is bringing Voices of Resilience, a showcase of Gazan writing, to the Barbican. The evening event will feature testimonies, and diary entries by writers Nahil Mohana, Sondos Sabra, Ala’a Ebeid and Atef Abu Saif.
According to the publisher, this is a performance of eye-witness accounts from people who have been living in Gaza since 7th October 2023. Diary entries from those experiencing the war will be accompanied by traditional Arabic music performed by Ahmed Adnan, and a visual score by Gazan filmmaker Hossam Abo Shamallah.
Comma Press c.e.o. Ra Page said: "This production marks a turning point for the UK arts community. To have a venue of this size and significance stand up and stand beside Palestinian artists after months of silence across the art world, for fear of reprisals and baseless allegations against anyone showing sympathy with Palestinians, this is a real step forward. It’s an example of bravery that other arts organisations will hopefully follow."
The show features performances by Nabil Elouahabi, Palestinian performers and others expressing solidarity with those in Gaza. Voices of Resilience has previously been hosted at HOME Manchester with performances by actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, and will also take place at Edinburgh International Book Festival on 18th August, with testimonies read by Scottish-Syrian actor Firas Ibrahim.
All proceeds of this event will go to the event’s writers and contributors, who are based in Gaza.
