Corvus has landed Kate Brook's Not Exactly What I Had in Mind, a "brilliantly sparkling" debut, which will be released as a lead title for the Atlantic imprint next year.
Pitched as perfect for fans of Beth O’Leary and Emily Henry, the novel follows four twenty-somethings as their lives collide and they learn that sometimes family and love is found in the place least expected.
The synopsis explains: "Hazel and Alfie have just moved in together as flatmates. They've also just slept together, which was either a catastrophic mistake, or the best decision of their lives. Then Hazel's sister Emily and her wife Daria arrive for a visit, having made a momentous decision that pushes Hazel and Alfie’s dilemma aside and binds the four of them together in an unexpected chain of events."
Corvus publishing director Sarah Hodgson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Philippa Sitters at DGA. North American rights were sold by Rebecca Wearmouth at PFD to Lindsey Rose at Penguin Random House, German rights to Diana Verlag at PRH Germany and Spanish rights to Suma de Letras.
Hodgson said: "I’m in awe of Kate’s talent as writer – her ability to create wonderfully engaging, highly relatable characters and explore important contemporary themes with a beautifully light touch is deeply impressive for a writer at the beginning of her career. I couldn’t be more delighted that she has chosen Corvus as the home for her brilliantly sparkling debut."
Brook works in publishing and her short-form writing has appeared in the Fiction Pool and the Real Story.
She said: "I am beyond thrilled to have joined the Corvus fold and to be working with Sarah, who has really brought out the best in this book. It's been a long road to get here, and I still can't quite believe that the idea I had several years ago has grown into a fully-fledged novel, ready to make its way in the world. I can’t wait to share it."
Not Exactly What I Had in Mind will publish in July 2022, leading the list for the second half of the year.
