Katie Cotton is leaving her position as group publisher at Quarto to take up a new role as publisher of picture books for indie Magic Cat.
Cotton will start her new role in January 2022, commissioning a bespoke picture book list for Magic Cat of six to eight titles per year. She will also oversee Magic Cat’s key story-led brands.
Magic Cat founders Jenny Broom and Rachel Williams have worked with Cotton both at Quarto and prior to that at Templar Publishing. In her role at Quarto, Cotton has commissioned three Waterstones Prize-winning picture books in the last six years alone.
Cotton said of the move: "Quarto has been a happy home for many years but I couldn't pass up the chance of working on a bespoke picture book list with Jenny and Rachel. They are something very rare: both creative geniuses and formidable businesswomen. It's a dream come true to join them and the rest of the fabulous Magic Cat team and I'm so excited to think of the great stories we will tell together."
Williams said: "Katie’s exemplary commissioning and editing skills shine through year after year, and we are delighted that she is joining to add her own flair to the list. She is one of a kind."
Broom added: "Katie has a way of sprinkling magic onto every book she commissions. I have always hoped she might join Magic Cat and am certain that she will flourish here."
