Matt Cowdery has joined Thames & Hudson Ltd (T&H) as head of international sales, taking responsibility for expanding the international trade sales structure to ensure continuous growth and reflect T&H’s evolving lists.
Cowdery’s appointment follows the announcement of Ian Bartley’s retirement after his 30-year tenure.
Starting off as a bookseller, initially at Waterstones in Canterbury and Piccadilly, London, followed by the UAE’s specialist bookselling chain Magrudy in Dubai, Cowdery joined Hachette in 2011 to build up the company’s presence and that of client publishers such as Chronicle Books in the UAE. He returned to the UK in 2015 to become Hachette’s head of sales for the Middle East and Africa while continuing to manage the company’s Dubai office, and took on the management of all of EMEA in 2021.
He said: "I’m thrilled to be joining T&H at such an exciting and innovative time for the business. It’s a list I’ve admired since my first day in bookselling at Waterstones Canterbury where Derek Jarman’s Garden was our till point recommendation. After a fun, challenging and varied decade at Hachette I’m really looking forward to building on the extraordinary export sales that Ian Bartley and the team have delivered for T&H over recent years."
Christian Frederking, T&H’s group director of sales and business development, added: "Very many thanks are due to Ian Bartley for his commitment to T&H and his successful management of our international trade sales over the last three decades.
"I’m excited to welcome Matt, who brings to T&H a wealth of practical experience from his career in the international trade markets, and unbound enthusiasm for his new role. I am hopeful that we can build on these very strong foundations and grow our sales networks particularly in post-Brexit Europe and the Middle East, of which Matt has exceptional knowledge."
