The National Literacy Trust hosted a birthday summer party to celebrate its 30 years.
Cressida Cowell, Francesca Simon, Katherine Rundell and Rob Biddulph were among the authors who attended the event, alongside Chris Smith, Axel Scheffler and Charlie Higson. They were joined by National Literacy Trust staff, trustees, corporate partners and supporters on Hachette’s rooftop.
Jonathan Douglas, c.e.o. of the National Literacy Trust, gave a speech highlighting the trust’s initiatives over the past three decades, including its Libraries for Primaries campaign and criminal justice work.
“It’s incredible to realise that, over the past 30 years, we have reached five million children and young people, and this is thanks to people like you, here in this room tonight," he said.
Also at the event were pupil librarians and teachers from Moreland Primary School in Islington, which represents the the 1,000th Libraries For Primaries library. They spoke about their new library and meeting the Queen when she opened it in May.
