Rachel Cugnoni is stepping up to the role of publisher for the Vintage division while Beth Coates has been promoted to publishing director for Vintage Paperbacks.
Cugnoni was publishing director for Vintage's paperback imprint and, since 2015, on top of this took on an additional cross-divisional role as publishing director for Vintage. In her new role, she will support editorial staff across all the imprints within the Vintage division, providing guidance on acquisition and all aspects of publication, as well as helping to shape the division's strategic direction. Cugnoni first began her association with Vintage in 1990 and took over the running of the Vintage paperbacks department in 2004. Two years later she was responsible for launching Vintage Classics. As publisher of the Vintage division, she will continue to report in to Vintage's m.d. Richard Cable, alongside the imprint heads within the division.
Coates' promotion to publishing director for paperbacks meanwhile sees her take over from Cugnoni full responsibility for the paperback list, including the Vintage Classics list. In addition to overseeing the team of six editors across the two lists, she will be responsible for the management of a newly created role of Vintage Catalogue editor, taken on by Nick Skidmore, previously editor at Vintage Classics. Coates joined Vintage in 2002, initially as an acquiring editor for Yellow Jersey, Chatto & Windus and Jonathan Cape. She moved to Vintage paperback in 2009 and since then has overseen the publication of authors such as Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Anne Enright and Yuval Noah Harari. In her new role Coates will continue to report in to Cugnoni, while Frances Macmillan who runs Vintage Classics will report in to Coates.
The changes sit alongside the creation of a new role within the paperback team, appointing Skidmore Vintage Catalogue editor. The creation of the role is part of an ongoing strategy to consolidate Vintage's catalogue publishing and bring the Vintage Classics and Vintage Paperbacks teams into "even closer alignment". In this role, Skidmore will be tasked with finding innovative ways to highlight the wide variety of the Vintage catalogue's 5,000 titles "driving readers to discover the wonders of the list".
Cable commented: "I am delighted Beth will be taking on greater responsibility for the entire Vintage Paperback list, building on her achievements over the last few years, and it's wonderful to have the benefit of Rachel's editorial acumen and wide-ranging publishing experience working alongside our imprint publishing directors."
