Independent publisher the Do Book Company has launched a book club subscription service via Kickstarter.
The indie is raising funds to support its new venture and has already surpassed its goal of £5,000, reaching £9,300 from 150 backers by the morning of 8th February.
The Do Book Club’s first featured title, another in its pocket guides series, will go out on 1st March. Subscribers will have the option of signing up to the Two Book Club where they receive a second related title, chosen by the featured author. Books will be delivered monthly to the subscriber’s door. Both writers will then come together for a Zoom conversation at the end of the month. These events will be free for subscribers and ticketed for anyone else who wants to join, with special guests expected to feature.
"We’re calling it an enhanced reading experience – rather than just a regular book subscription," said company founder Miranda West. "Posting a book each month to a group of readers is about creating a sense of community. Each newly published title will become that month’s featured read, and we’ll present backlist titles that may have been overlooked for one reason or another – published during lockdown, for example. Subscribers who already own that month’s book will be able to skip it.
"It’s something that people have asked about over the past few years but we needed to reach a critical mass of titles so we could sustain it over the long term. Last year we published our 30th book, Do Walk, and have many more in the pipeline."
The book club conversations will be hosted by Tim Frenneaux, founder and curator of Adventurous Ink, an outdoor-focused book community.
Launched in 2013, the Do Book Company specialises in practical guides designed to help creative people work smarter and create positive change. The collection spans design, business, wellbeing and sustainable living with each book focusing on the ‘doing’ rather than the background theory.
A 5% royalty from book sales go towards funding the Do Lectures, an annual event held in Wales.
