Elliott & Thompson has appointed Katie Bond as publisher and Minna Fry as associate publisher.
Bond will have responsibility for the strategic direction and growth of the list, as well as commissioning non-fiction titles to sit alongside books by authors including Tim Marshall, Julia Boyd and Nancy Campbell.
She will start in the new role on 26th February, reporting to chairman Lorne Forsyth, who said: “I am delighted that Katie is joining us as our new publisher and welcome her energy, enthusiasm and creative talent. She will lead a formidable commissioning team, growing our list alongside publishing director Sarah Rigby, editorial director Pippa Crane, directors Olivia Bays and Jennie Condell, and our new associate publisher Minna Fry, whose publishing prowess I much admire."
Bond began commissioning at Bloomsbury, where she was also publicity and marketing director, and published Margaret Atwood, Sheila Hancock, Khaled Hosseini and J K Rowling, as well as Ben Schott, Donna Tartt and Joanna Trollope. She went on to be publisher at the National Trust and Aurum and, most recently, worked freelance, commissioning non-fiction for Bedford Square Publishers, and on PR campaigns for Midas, HarperCollins and John Murray.
“I am thrilled to be joining the nimble, dedicated and hugely talented team at Elliott & Thompson, where working collaboratively with authors and taking great care over every aspect of every book is at the heart of creating a successful and joyful independent publishing experience," Bond added. "I am also much looking forward to working with Minna Fry again. Minna and I share an evangelical approach to books we love and a passion for leaving no stone unturned in publishing great books and getting them into the hands of readers worldwide.”
Continuing to run The Writers’ Prize—to be awarded at the London Book Fair on 13th March—Fry will join as associate publisher on 18th March, commissioning four to five new titles a year. She has worked at Secker & Warburg, Pan Macmillan, Bloomsbury and HarperCollins in a variety of roles.
Fry was behind the publishing campaigns for Trainspotting (Vintage), Bridget Jones’s Diary (Picador), The Kite Runner (Bloomsbury), All the Light you Cannot See (Fourth Estate), Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies (Fourth Estate), and the Harry Potter series (Bloomsbury). She has also worked with John Banville, Gitta Sereny, Chris Patten, Max Hastings and Ben Macintyre.
Joining the Folio Prize in 2017, Fry secured a seven-year sponsorship from Rathbones, and launched the prize’s mentorship scheme. She said: “I am delighted to be joining a company which is punching well above its weight and publishing, brilliantly, some wonderful books. I can’t wait to be in a commissioning role for the first time in my rather long career and look forward to providing a happy home for authors old and new. I’ll have my eye out for titles on politics, sport, world affairs, war, peace as well as irresistible memoirs and fiction gems.”
