Edinburgh University Press (EUP) has reported an “outstanding” year, with sales of over £5m, up 17% on the previous financial year.
In the year ending 31st July the press reported a surplus of £286,000 against a budgeted loss of £235,000. EUP said 2023 “was significant in being the first year of our new five-year strategic plan”.
It continued: “We had set out an ambitious range of objectives for the year, across seven strategic themes grouped under the banners of mission and business sustainability and have made great progress across the board.
“This is the result of the hard work and dedication of everyone who is a part of the EUP community – our authors and editors, our supporters and advocates within the University of Edinburgh, our business partners, our freelancers, and of course our in-house team.”
Nicola Ramsey, chief executive, said: “This has been an outstanding year for Edinburgh University Press. Reaching £5m in sales is one part of this picture, but equally important is the way we have developed our focus on our vision, mission and values. We have a fantastic team at EUP, all committed to the contribution we can make to our academic community, and our successful year is a direct result of their dedication.”
At the end of the financial year, print books represented 54% of the press’ output, while e-books represented 46%. The press forecasts its output to be 50:50 in a few years’ time.
