Faber is integrating its music and pop culture list Faber Social into its general non-fiction publishing, with immediate effect. Alexa von Hirschberg, head of Faber Social, now becomes publishing director, while deputy head Dan Papps is made deputy director of music.
Books published under the Faber Social brand will be amalgamated into general non-fiction, with upcoming titles include Jackie Kay's biography of Bessie Smith, the memoir of Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson, a "highly visual bible" about the world of Mark E Smith and the Fall titled Excavate!, and a new biography of singer-songwriter Nico.
The Faber Social brand will become a live events programme, curated by the music and pop culture team and run alongside Faber Members. The first event is on 18th February, in collaboration with the British Library, featuring Jackie Kay in conversation with Bernardine Evaristo about Bessie Smith, with accompanying live music.
Von Hirschberg said: "Faber has always been a house dedicated to the best in music and pop culture publishing. By integrating the Faber Social books into general non-fiction, these excellent and wide-ranging titles will be given the freedom to reach a wider audience and challenge what 'music books' can be and whom they are for. This structure is also more in keeping with the architecture of the other brilliant arts lists at Faber, such as Film and Classical Music."
As publishing director, von Hirschberg will continue to lead the music and pop culture list, in addition to acquiring a small number of general fiction and non-fiction titles.
In his new role, Papps, who became deputy head of Faber Social last year, will continue to acquire two to three titles a year, alongside his responsibility for running the campaigns and helping von Hirschberg oversee the music list.
Publisher Alex Bowler said: "Over the past year, Alexa and Dan have brought electrifying new energy and a wide cast of new names, influences and experiences to the music and pop culture list. It’s exciting and fitting to now formally integrate this dynamic force into the centre of our publishing."
