Faber & Faber has signed Charles Forsman's The End of the F***ing World, the graphic novel that inspired the Channel 4/Netflix Original Series.
Never-before published in the UK and told through chapters which alternate between each character's perspective, The End of the F***ing World tells the story of James and Alyssa, two teenagers facing the fears of coming adulthood.
Faber said: "As this somewhat familiar teenage experience takes a more nihilistic turn, with James's character becoming rapidly more sociopathic, they are forced to take a road trip that owes as much to 'Badlands' as The Catcher in the Rye, and which threatens both their futures forever."
Editorial director Angus Cargill bought UK and Commonwealth (excluding Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Open EU) from Gary Groth at Fantagraphics in Seattle, Washington.
Cargill said: "I was so thrilled to discover Charles's work, he's a phenomenal artist and writer, one who sits brilliantly alongside people like Emily Carroll, Craig Thompson and Adrian Tomine on our graphic novel list. It's very exciting to be publishing his work in the UK for the first time, and with the brilliant Channel 4/Netflix adaptation doing so well at the moment we hope the original book — fierce, profane, funny, challenging and sweet — will reach many, many new fans."
The End of the F***ing World was adapted into an eight-part series, originally released on Channel 4 and then Netflix internationally. It stars Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden as James and Alyssa respectively. The title is published by Fantagraphics in the US.
Forsman is based in Western Massachusetts, US, and is a graduate of The Center for Cartoon Studies. He is a three-time Ignatz Award-winner for his self-published mini-comic Snake Oil. He went on to run a small press called Oily Comics where he published many up and coming cartoonists.
Faber will publish The End of the F***ing World on 15th March.
