Farshore will be the headline sponsor of this year’s CILIP Youth Libraries Group Conference.
The HarperCollins children’s imprint publishes the likes of Michael Morpurgo and Lemony Snicket as well as characters and brands including Minecraft, Beano, Winnie-the-Pooh and Mr Men and Little Miss.
The conference will take place from 16th–18th September at The Quays Hotel in Sheffield. It will be in person for the first time in two years, but there will be a virtual programme of events running from 12th–14th September for those unable to attend.
This year’s conference will celebrate the theme of "Reading the Planet; Libraries in a Changing Climate", focusing on the environment, climate change and young people’s activism. Farshore said it “recognises the importance of the conference’s theme” and highlighted its own work "tackling glitter and removing plastic laminates” from all its books.
Morpurgo will launch the conference with a celebratory event marking 40 years since Farshore published War Horse, and the role libraries have played in making his book a children’s classic. Illustrator James Jones will create the artwork for the conference logo and promotional materials, using artwork from his new picture book The Odd Fish written by Naomi Jones and illustrated by himself, which teaches children about plastic pollution.
Cally Poplak, executive publisher of Farshore, said: “Farshore’s research shows that free choice and wide choice are crucial to helping children become keen readers, which in turn helps with attainment and wellbeing – and this is what all families can find in a library. So, we couldn’t be more delighted to partner with CILIP, especially given the environmental theme, which is hugely important to our company DNA – and to our readers.”
Joy Court, conference manager for CILIP Youth Libraries Group, added: “We are absolutely delighted to have this valuable partnership with Farshore, their history of ethical publishing, first as Egmont and now under their new name, is so perfectly in tune with our environmentally focused theme. Their generosity will ensure that our delegates and speakers will have a very memorable experience in Sheffield. It was important to us to be as inclusive of our membership as possible in these challenging times, which is why we are offering both a virtual and a live programme to ensure we have something for everyone and the sponsorship has helped to make this possible.”
