Puffin will publish Fearne Cotton's first children's book, My Mood Journal, in November, as the first title in a two-book deal.
The publisher acquired world rights to two books from Amanda Harris, director of publishing at YMU. The first title will be published on 26th November 2020, and a second non-fiction title will follow in 2021.
My Mood Journal is an activity book for children aged seven plus, which aims to help them "feel empowered to identify and understand their emotions". Each chapter will be fully illustrated and include notes from Cotton, in addition to her introduction.
Amanda Punter, publishing director, commented: "We are absolutely thrilled to be extending Fearne Cotton’s non-fiction publishing into the children’s market. Fearne has an instinctive and personal understanding of family life and of the pressures on modern children, as well as how to engage them. At PRH Children’s we’ve long-admired the way she has championed wellness with such integrity, relatability and lightness of touch and we feel sure that this first book aimed at younger readers will be a much-welcomed tool for a new generation, particularly in these challenging times."
Cotton commented: "Emotions are tricky to understand but the more we explore them and make friends with them the easier it is to navigate most situations in life. As a mother and advocate of discussing mental health, this book is very close to my heart. This book is for kids to really pour out how they feel in any given moment so they can learn about emotions on their terms. This journal is about expression, understanding and also fun as each emotion is represented by a character that helps the child through the chapter. I really hope your children enjoy using it."
Cotton has previously published adult non-fiction books including Happy: Finding Joy in Every Day and Letting Go of Perfect (Orion Spring, 2017) and Calm: Working Through Life's Daily Stresses to Find a Peaceful Centre (Orion Spring, 2018).
