Jamie Oliver has dished up a fifth week as the UK Official Top 50 number one, as 5 Ingredients—Quick & Easy Food (Michael Joseph) sold 44,956 copies for £537,538. Now the fourth-bestselling title of the year in volume terms, last week it defeated David Walliams’ The World’s Worst Children 2 (HarperCollins Children's) to become the most valuable book of the year to date, at just a whisker under £3m earned.
Ken Follett’s A Column of Fire (Macmillan) blazed into second place, swiping the Original Fiction number one from John Le Carre’s A Legacy of Spies (Viking). With 14,226 copies sold, it is the author’s biggest ever single-week volume for a hardback, and his second week in the category top spot.
Robert Harris’ Munich (Hutchinson) goose-stepped into third overall, and following in the footsteps of the success of Conclave earlier this year, achieved Harris’ biggest first week for a hardback in volume terms. To complete the veteran trio, Martina Cole’s Damaged (Headline) came in in fourth with 12,723 copies sold. It is only the second time in BookScan history that Cole’s new hardback hasn’t gone straight to the top of the Original Fiction top 20—in a particularly crowded hardback fiction chart, she had to settle for third.
Sarah Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes (Harper) once again scaled the Mass Market Fiction number one, selling 10,066 copies, while Joanna Trollope’s City of Friends (Pan) and Josephine Cox’s A Family Secret (Harper) both scored top five placings in the paperback top 20.
Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens (Vintage) re-claimed the Paperback Non-Fiction number one for an 11th non-consecutive week, though it was in fact the first time in 13 weeks the title’s volume has dropped below 6,000 copies sold per week.
Cressida Cowell’s The Wizards of Once (Hodder Children's) magicked up the author’s first ever Children’s number one spot, with 8,309 copies sold. Clare Balding’s The Racehorse who Disappeared (Puffin) also entered the Children’s Fiction chart in 17th place.
The Pre-School and Picture Books top 20 is already carving the Jack-o-Lantern and buying mini Mars Bars in bulk—Peppa: Pumpkin Competition (Ladybird) and Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells’ That’s Not My Witch (Usborne) both haunted the chart.
