Footnote Press has launched a self-guided audio walking tour spanning Mayfair to Soho as part of a promotion for Paul Baker’s new book Camp! The Story of the Attitude that Conquered the World.
“A Camp! Tour of London”, narrated by Baker, has been created in collaboration with audio-tour platform VoiceMap. The audio covers the “glitz and grunge of camp history”, and takes listeners to the haunts of icons like Beau Brummel, Oscar Wilde and Josephine Baker.
Footnote is making it available free during Pride month, and also offers a range of “exclusive treats” available in partnership with Foyles Charing Cross, Village Bar in Soho and Club Soda Tasting Rooms in Holborn.
The first 50 people to complete the self-guided tour will be able to purchase a deluxe book bundle from Foyles Bookshop on Charing Cross Road, comprising a Camp!-themed fan, a premium print and the hardback edition of the book. Two-for-one Rainbow Pilsners will be offered at Village Soho and 50% off any drink at the bar will be offered at Club Soda Tasting Rooms, if customers can state the name of the person the walking tour’s last stop is centred on.
Footnote Press marketing director Sujoy Roy said: “We are thrilled to be working with Paul to bring the Camp! audio tour to the streets of London for Pride month and beyond. I hope as many people as possible will join us in celebrating the spirit and history of camp this summer. This new initiative is part of Footnote Press’ commitment to bringing marginalised voices and experiences to new audiences in innovative ways.”
Baker is a professor of English Language at Lancaster University and has written more than 20 books, for both academic and popular audiences. Camp! The Story of the Attitude that Conquered the World explores what camp is, where it came from and its history from pop culture to protest.
Footnote launched in partnership with Bonnier Books UK and publishes books on migration, identity, reclamation and resistance.
