The Works has trimmed almost half of its operational board with four directors leaving the company last month, in a streamlining strategy aimed at building a more “agile and focused” leadership team.
As a result of the changes, retail director Darren MacDonald, IT director Alistair Fuller, property director Jeremy Smith and marketing director Simon Peck left The Works at the end of April.
The news follows the retail chain’s full-year accounts, which were posted on Tuesday (21st May); following a “year of considerable change”, the company said its strategy was focused on improving margins and reducing costs.
Gavin Peck, chief executive of The Works, told The Bookseller: “As referenced in our recent full-year trading update, in recent months we have implemented several strategic changes to reflect where The Works is today and ensure that the business is best able to deliver on its strategy.
“As part of these changes, we have decided to streamline our operational board to give us a more agile and focused leadership team. This will help accelerate the delivery our plans, improve our cross-functional working and be more closely aligned to the future direction of the business.
“This was not an easy decision and I want to thank those colleagues who are leaving the business. They have all had a significant and positive impact on The Works, helping the business to evolve to where it is today and we wish all of them the very best for the future.”
Peck added: “I look forward to working with the new focused operational board to deliver on our purpose, strategy and continue to delight our customers.”
The new operational board at The Works team will consist of Gavin Peck, Rosie Fordham (chief financial officer), Debbie Jamieson (chief people and retail officer), Lynne Tooms (chief commercial officer) and Dean Hawkridge (chief supply chain and digital officer).
