The uptick in English-language exports propelled by BookTok, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on rights and audiobook trends are among the topics that will be covered by the trade programme at Frankfurter Buchmesse on 16th to 24th October 2024.
The 76th book fair will include conferences, workshops and talks on a range of issues affecting the industry. There has been an increased presence of TV and film producers at recent book fairs, and the 2024 Frankfurt Fair has a focus on book-to-screen adaptations. At the "Book-to-Screen Day" on 18th October, filmmakers will get the chance to discover new books and connect with publishing professionals.
The Bologna Children’s Book Fair and Frankfurter Buchmesse are also expanding into games. Both events will include a new Games Business Centre to connect publishers with the games industry.
AI features heavily in this year’s programme, with events exploring how publisher can capitalise on AI for "smarter publishing" and understanding the "root of responsible AI".
Moreover, at the 2024 Rights Meeting, Sara Lloyd, the group communications director and global AI lead at Pan Macmillan, will talk about developments in the field, new forms of licensing and the impact AI has on running a rights business.
Also at the Rights Meeting, Lisanne Mathijssen, senior commissioning editor at HarperCollins Holland, will talk about the increase in exports in English "fuelled by trends such as #BookTok".
The English-language programme at the Publishing Perspectives Forum will take place at the Frankfurt Studio. Hachette Book Group US and Hachette UK c.e.o. David Shelley and Arnaud Nourry, c.e.o. and founder of the new Les Nouveaux Éditeurs group, will separately be in conversation with Porter Anderson, editor-in-chief of the Publishing Perspectives magazine.
The growth in the audiobook market will also be explored at the fair, which will feature an almost doubled-in-size Audio Area this year, compared to 2023. New companies will be attending alongside leaders like Audible and Spotify.
