Arts producer Free Word has announced it has formally begun the process of closing down the organisation.
The news comes after last month's announcement that the organisation’s core funder Fritt Ord, a Norwegian private foundation, would be selling Free Word’s Central London venue in Clerkenwell, and will not renew its lease. The organisation previously used income raised from private event hires and licensing space to residents to fund its creative programming and operational costs.
Fritt Ord's decision to sell the Farringdon Road property comes following a change of funding and investment priorities which will now see the trust disinvest in commercial property following the pandemic. Free Word and its resident organisations will vacate the building by May 31st.
The multi-disciplinary arts producer has developed work with over 2,000 writers, artists and activists including Selina Thompson, Travis Alabanza, Michael Rosen and Lowkey since its conception in 2009 and established relationships with hundreds of charities, partners and media organisations, producing creative work in collaboration with the likes of Shelter, The London Renters Union, The Forgiveness Project and gal-dem.
Tim Duffy, chair of trustees said: “After 12 successful years in Clerkenwell with our residents, partners and associates, it is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Free Word. Free Word leaves behind a rich artistic legacy and any surplus funds will be distributed in accordance with Free Word’s charitable objectives. Our longer-term aim is to find a like-minded cause to take on Free Word’s existing assets and ambitions. I would like to thank staff, past and present, for their commitment, talent and creativity in making Free Word what it was.”
Roma Backhouse, artistic director and c.e.o. of Free Word added: “I am saddened to announce the news of Free Word’s imminent closure. Over the years Free Word has worked with some of the most important writers, artists and activists of our time and I thank all of those who contributed to our mission, particularly Free Word’s talented team. I’d also like to thank our supporters over the years, notably Arts Council England and Fritt Ord who have allowed us to serve the literary community and beyond for over a decade. ”
The majority of Free Word’s staff and event workers will be released from contracts as of May 31st, with a small core team working into June to finalise the closure of the organisation. Smith & Williamson LLP has been appointed to assist in managing Free Word’s closure with the aim of the process being a solvent liquidation.
