John Freeman, former president of the National Book Critics Circle has officially been appointed as editor of Granta. Freeman was appointed acting editor in May after the departure of Alex Clark.
Freeman will be based in both New York and London. Freeman has also written a non-fiction title The Tyranny of Email, which will be published by Scribner on 20th October.
Freeman said: "Working at a magazine with Granta's ground-breaking heritage is a privilege and a real joy. I look forward to building on Granta's tradition of introducing new writers, of the Best Young American and Best Young British editions, and of creating new themes for our writers so they can explore the stories they feel must be told."
Publisher Sigrid Rausing said: "John is that rare thing, an editor and critic who is also an entrepreneur, with an exceptional degree of literary knowledge and memory. We are delighted that he has accepted the position of editor of Granta."
