Granta is to publish Sandra Newman's latest novel, The Men, in 2022.
Editorial director Anne Meadows acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Victoria Hobbs at A M Heath in an exclusive submission.
Described as "a dazzling, mind-bending novel of feminist utopias and impossible choices", the novel explores a world where men vanish from the world. The synopsis explains: "Set in a world in which men – all men – suddenly and inexplicably disappear from the face of the earth, The Men follows a group of grieving women determined to bring them back. But as the post-men world becomes ever more perfect, our heroines must reckon with a terrible question: what will be the cost of the men’s return?"
Meadows said: "The Men is mind-blowing, gripping and profoundly disquieting: everything we have come to expect from Sandra’s unique and fantastic mind. It has been such a pleasure watching readers fall in love with The Heavens, and I am so happy to be able to send this good news into the world: more Sandra Newman, coming in 2022."
Newman is the author of four novels, a memoir and two books on literature. She has been longlisted for the Folio Prize and the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction, and shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. She is a graduate of the creative writing programme at the University of East Anglia. Her most recent novel, The Heavens (published by Granta in 2019), is published in paperback this November.
