Quercus has acquired Me and White Supremacy: A Guided Journal by Layla F Saad, intended to be an "official companion" to the original title, helping readers to recognise privilege and combat racism.
Jane Sturrock bought UK and Commonwealth rights in the Me and White Supremacy: A Guided Journal from Lorella Belli at the Lorella Belli Literary Agency on behalf of Folio Literary Management. It will be published on 10th November 2020.
Saad’s Me and White Supremacy, published in January 2020, began life in June 2018 as 28-day challenge hosted on Instagram for people with white privilege to "unflinchingly examine the ways that they are complicit in upholding the oppressive system of white supremacy". Since then, the UK edition has sold almost 115,000 copies worldwide across all formats, according to Quercus.
The Me and White Supremacy guided journal is billed as "the perfect place for readers to begin their antiracism journey", including the book’s original weekly prompts while adding lots of space for note-taking.
Saad said: "I believe that awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. But without the conscious awareness of how white supremacy operates in your unconscious thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours, it is difficult to practice anti-racism in a meaningful way. One of the most powerful ways to create conscious awareness is the practice of journaling – which is why it is a key feature of Me and White Supremacy, and why I have created this guided journal to accompany it."
Sturrock said: "Me and White Supremacy has always been a book that you do, not just read, so I’m delighted we’re publishing a journal to help readers engage with it more fully and to commit their anti-racism work to paper."
