Janice Hallett, S A Cosby and Abir Mukherjee are among those shortlisted for the 2022 Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) Dagger awards (see full shortlists below).
The headline Gold Dagger, awarded for the crime novel of the year, sees Cosby nominated for Razorblade Tears (Headline) alongside Mukherjee’s The Shadows of Men (Harvill Secker) and debut author Jacqueline Bublitz’s Before You Knew My Name (Sphere). Ray Celestin is also in contention for Sunset Swing (Mantle), alongside John Hart’s The Unwilling (Zaffre) and William Shaw’s The Trawlerman (riverrun).
Hallett is among the rising stars shortlisted for the John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger for the best debut novel of the year for The Appeal (Viper), vying against Tariq Ashkanani’s Welcome to Cooper (Thomas & Mercer), Eloísa Díaz’s The Repentence (Weidenfield & Nicolson) and Alan Gillespie’s The Mash House (Unbound Digital). Karin Nordin’s Where Ravens Roost (HQ) is also in contention, alongside Rahul Raina’s How to Kidnap the Rich (Little, Brown) and Mark Wightman’s Waking the Tiger (Hobeck Books).
Cosby is also shortlisted for the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for thriller of the year against Linwood Barclay’s Find You First (HQ), Sharon Bolton’s The Pact (Orion), Steve Cavanagh’s The Devil’s Advocate, M W Craven’s Dead Ground (Constable) and Laura Lippman’s Dream Girl (Faber).
Maxim Jakubowski, chair of the CWA, said: “So many good titles and authors appeared on our longlists, but in a year of such overall excellence, to reach the shortlist is a terrific achievement. Congratulations to all the nominees, writers both established and new, publishers large and small; a diversity of quality demonstrating the independence of our judges.”
The Dagger awards ceremony will be held at the Leonardo City hotel in London on 29th June, coinciding with National Crime Reading Month, which takes place throughout June. Tickets are available now from the CWA.
