HarperNonFiction has appointed Huw Armstrong as publishing director in the editorial team, starting on 6th January 2025. Armstrong joins the division following seven years at Hodder & Stoughton, where he published books from a range of authors – including Behind These Doors by Alex South, Track Record by George the Poet and Billion Dollar Loser by Reeves Wiedeman, as well as sports books from the likes of Stuart Broad and Gary Neville.
At HarperNonFiction Armstrong will report to Joel Simons, publisher, commissioning on to the Mudlark and Smart Thinking list, with a focus on tech, soft business, big ideas and narrative non-fiction.
Simons said: “I’m delighted Huw is going to be joining us here at HarperNonFiction. He has a highly enviable track record of creating bestselling books both in the UK and internationally, and I have no doubt he’ll be a huge success here as we look to expand our general non-fiction list. A real team player with natural publishing acumen, I’m really looking forward to working with him and our recently promoted commissioning editor, Imogen Gordon Clark, in accelerating growth on both the Mudlark and Smart Thinking lists and cementing ourselves as a major player in this exciting area of the market.”
Armstrong said: “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to join HarperNonFiction – a team I’ve long admired and have always been impressed with. I’m sad to be leaving my authors and colleagues, who’ve made my time at Hodder so great, but it’s an exciting time to be joining Sarah, Joel, and the rest of the team.”
Sarah Emsley, HarperNonFiction m.d. and publisher, said: “This appointment is the last of the HarperNonFiction senior editorial restructure, with our three new commissioning centres – Mudlark & Smart Thinking, Sport & Entertainment, and Thorsons & Lifestyle – now firmly in place. I couldn’t be more delighted that Huw, such a brilliant and dynamic publisher, will be completing the team.”
