HarperNorth executive publisher Oli Malcolm said there is a “an incredibly bright future for publishing outside London” after the Manchester-based division of HarperCollins celebrated its first Sunday Times number one bestseller.
This weekend’s charts showed comedian Sophie McCartney’s Tired and Tested: The Wild Ride into Parenthood has reached the number one spot in the newspaper’s Hardback Non-Fiction chart.
The Bookseller’s official chart places McCartney’s book at number two behind Pinch of Nom (Bluebird) and number nine in the Official Top 50.
Malcolm said he was “hugely proud” of the team in Manchester for the feat. “Establishing a start-up during a pandemic has been no easy task, but the quality of this book—and its commercial success—is an amazing testament to their collective endeavour," he said. "I hope this puts down a visible marker that there is an incredibly bright future for publishing outside of London."
Publishing director Genevieve Pegg added: “We set out to tell stories—and sell stories—from the north, and getting Sophie’s fantastic debut Tired and Tested to the top of the charts is a key part of our plan to get our brilliant writers’ voices heard everywhere–nationally and internationally. We’ve got a slew of fantastic authors publishing over the next few months and we look forward to readers discovering lots more HarperNorth talent soon.”
