HarperCollins has promoted Rachel Winterbottom to publishing director at HarperVoyager and Magpie. Winterbottom—formerly editorial director—will report to HarperVoyager and Magpie publisher Natasha Bardon, who returns from parental leave this week.
In her first 12 months at HarperCollins, Winterbottom has acquired début adult fantasy Warrior Princess Assassin from YA author Brigid Kemmerer (Voyager) and dark romantasy Rose in Chains by Julie Soto (Magpie) for publication next year. She also triumphed in the nine-way auction for When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A Parker.
Since hardback release on 13th June, Parker’s book has sold 29,142 through the Total Consumer Market, has been a #1 Sunday Times bestseller twice and has spent seven consecutive weeks in the top 10 hardback bestseller chart.
Winterbottom has also shepherded Sunday Times bestselling authors Saara El-Arifi, Hannah Kaner and Taran Matharu to the top of the charts.
Winterbottom said: "I feel extraordinarily lucky to be part of the incredibly talented, hardworking dream team at HarperVoyager and Magpie Books, publishing the best books in the business. I’m absolutely delighted to be stepping up into this role at such an exciting time as the list continues to boom thanks to our truly exceptional authors and the publishing superstars at HarperCollins."
Bardon said: "I’m so thrilled to see Rachel stepping into her new role as publishing director. It has been wonderful to see her thrive over the past year and continue the phenomenal and award-winning success of HarperVoyager and Magpie Books, particularly as we enter HarperVoyager’s 30th anniversary year. She is a brilliant publisher and her author care is second to none. I feel incredibly lucky to be working with her and the rest of the amazing team."
Frankie Gray, managing director and publisher at HarperFiction, said: "At a time of phenomenal growth in SFF publishing, it is a joy and a privilege to see the deep expertise within our Voyager team, as they go from strength to strength, leading the market at every turn. Rachel is an astute acquirer, an ambitious, creative publisher and an integral part of Voyager’s success. We are thrilled to see her take on this richly deserved new position alongside the exceptional Voyager team: Publisher Natasha Bardon, publishing director Jane Johnson, editor Elizabeth Vaziri and editorial assistant Chloe Gough."
