Hachette Children’s Group has bagged “a modern-day queer reimagining of ‘Grease’” by Australian YA writer Sophie Gonzales.
Tig Wallace, senior commissioning editor, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a deal made with Chris Scheina at Macmillan US. Only Mostly Devastated will be published on 5th March 2020 under the Hodder Children’s Books imprint.
The synopsis explains: “Enrolled at a new school, Ollie is shocked to be reunited with his summer fling, Will. But he’s not the affectionate and comfortably queer guy Ollie remembers from summer. This Will is a class clown, a basketball jock and kind of a jerk. The last time Ollie gave Will his heart, he got badly hurt. He would have to be an idiot to trust him with it again. Right? The perfect laugh-out-loud romantic comedy full of hope, love and acceptance."
Wallace said: “Only Mostly Devastated is a spark of light – an utterly joyful read that had me irresponsibly glued to my Kindle in many precarious situations. It is exactly the kind of positive, representative, uproariously funny book YA readers need and I couldn’t be prouder to be publishing it.”
Gonzales commented: “I’m beyond thrilled to work with the amazing team at Hachette, and bursting at the seams with excitement for Only Mostly Devastated to find its readers in the UK and Commonwealth—which includes my home country, Australia.”
