Hodder Education Group has acquired teaching and learning resource specialist Illuminate Publishing for an undisclosed fee.
Lis Tribe, Hodder Education's m.d., said she would continue to work with Illuminate's existing team of freelancers and suppliers following the acquisition. Its owners Rick and Clare Jackman and Peter and Saskia Burton will work with Hodder over the next year to “ensure a seamless transition”, Tribe added.
She said: “Illuminate has over the past 11 years built an extremely successful and distinctive list of titles supporting UK qualifications, especially from WJEC and key A-Level subjects such as psychology, and we have enjoyed competing with them during this time. I am delighted that the directors chose to sell their business to Hodder Education to grow and nurture it for years to come.”
According to its most recently filed accounts, the Cheltenham-based publisher had a total turnover of £3.4m in the year ending 31st December 2020, up from the £3m it reported in 2019.
Tribe said: “Hodder Education has long pursued a strategy of focussed publishing for niche markets both in the UK and internationally. Illuminate Publishing’s list fits this strategy, and with a strength in print textbooks provides us with an opportunity for growth as we strengthen our service and reputation in digital resources.
“We will maintain the Illuminate brand for existing and new publishing, and continue to work with the strong team of editorial, design and marketing freelancers that has supported Illuminate so well. We will also continue to work with Rick and Clare Jackman, and Peter and Saskia Burton for a transition period to ensure we protect and maintain Illuminate’s particular approach. There will be a dedicated publishing and marketing team to work on the Illuminate list going forward.”
The directors of Illuminate commented: "We are delighted that Hodder Education is to become the new home for Illuminate. We owe it to our authors and our customers for the publishing to go somewhere it will continue to evolve and flourish, and for those relationships to be nurtured. It was clear to us from the very beginning that Hodder was that publisher. Illuminate is in the safest of hands and we have absolutely no doubt it will continue to go from strength to strength."
