Hodder & Stoughton has revealed a 50th anniversary special hardback edition of Stephen King’s debut novel Carrie, the first in a special line of the author’s classic works.
Featuring a new introduction by Margaret Atwood and cover art from Hodder art director Alasdair Oliver, it will be published on 26th March, ahead of the horror classic’s half-century anniversary on 5th April.
Hodder has collaborated with Doubleday and Vintage Books in the US who are releasing an updated 50th anniversary edition of the novel in both trade paperback and mass market paperback with the same introduction by Atwood.
The edition will be the first in a new line of Stephen King Classic hardbacks to be sold through the trade: Salem’s Lot is due in 2025, The Shining in 2027 and The Stand and Night Shift in 2028.
Philippa Pride, King’s UK editor, said: “As Stephen King explains in On Writing, he initially threw the early pages of the Carrie manuscript in the waste basket.
“His wife, Tabby, discovered them, smoothed out the ‘crumpled balls of paper’, read them and said: ‘You’ve got something here’. He did – the start of a bestselling career and a book which would continue to resonate with readers half a century later.”
She added: “With its innovative themes and unique structure, Carrie would not only change the landscape of horror fiction but would influence generations of writers for over 50 years.
“We are hugely excited to be launching this exquisite new hardback edition to celebrate the jewel in a landmark year for Stephen King at Hodder, and are thrilled that the wonderful Margaret Atwood has written a fascinating introduction to his timeless classic.”
Hodder called the new Carrie special edition “an exciting highlight in a bumper year for Stephen King” as it will be followed by the publication of You Like It Darker on 21st May, a collection of 12 stories, many of which have never been published before.
