HQ will publish The Prison Doctor: Foreign Bodies, the third title in Dr Amanda Brown's Prison Doctor series.
Deputy publishing director Kate Fox acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Susan Smith at MBA Literary Agents. The title will be published in paperback, e-book and audio in June 2021.
The Prison Doctor: Foreign Bodies will explore Brown’s time as a locum working in a prison for foreign nationals. The third title will feature more stories from prison, from a dying man desperate to spend his last days surrounded by his family, to a prisoner at risk of persecution if he returns to his country.
Fox said: "Amanda never fails to astound me with the empathy and care she gives to her patients from every walk of life. The medical profession has never been under more scrutiny than this year, but Amanda tells a side of the work that so rarely gets seen. The prison for foreign nationals will shine a light on these stories with the warmth, sensitivity and the drama that The Prison Doctor is known for."
Brown commented: "I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to write a third book, which will allow me to dip in and out of memories spanning 40 years in medicine, including stories from my time spent working in a foreign national prison. I met a fascinating mix of people from all over the world there, and found the human stories behind their imprisonment to be humbling and informative. I hope that readers will find them equally enlightening and enriching."
The two previous titles in the series, The Prison Doctor (2019) and The Prison Doctor: Women Inside (2020) were also published by HQ.
