Indie press Hurst Publishers is urgently reprinting thousands more copies of Dan Jackson’s The Northumbrians, saying it has sold out less than a month after publication.
Hurst said consistent re-orders from bookshops and launch sales alongside word of mouth reaction in the North East has led to a reprint in time for Christmas and further events. It is printing 3,500 more copies following an initial run of 3,000.
Jackon’s book “explores the deep roots of Northumbrian culture - hard work and heavy drinking, sociability and sentimentality, militarism and masculinity - in centuries of border warfare and dangerous and demanding work in industry, at sea and underground”.
Initially promoted primarily though local bookshops and festivals, The Northumbrians: North-East England and Its People, A History has been praised by figures including historian Tom Holland, Times journalist Matt Ridley and independent MP Rory Stewart. It has sold 1,438 copies for £25,238 through Nielsen BookScan since its release on 26th September.
Associate publisher and director of sales and marketing, Kathleen May, said: “While we anticipated this would sell well locally, we are delighted to see accounts like Blackwells Broad Street in Oxford re-ordering multiple copies within a fortnight.”
Distribution is by MDL.
