The Indigo Press has acquired Don't Let it Get You Down, a "powerful and provocative collection of essays" from writer, speaker and lawyer Savala Nolan.
Susie Nicklin, commissioning editor, obtained UK and Commonwealth rights from Abner Stein in association with Chase Literary Agency for publication on 30th June 2022.
Nolan’s essays offer “poignant reflections on living between society’s most charged, politicised, and intractably polar spaces – between black and white, rich and poor, thin and fat". Each essay is infused with "unforgettable anecdotes" combined with humour and “Nolan’s appetites”.
Featured in the likes of Vogue, Time and The New York Times Book Review, Nolan said: "Our bodies are where we experience the categories that define us – race, gender, class, and more. They’re home to everything we know about the world. Over time, our bodies become rich with knowledge and epiphany, humor and grief, truth but also lies. What's more, the personal and the political are in constant collision in the body.”
Nicklin said: “These essays from Savala made me sit up straighter and engaged both my mind and emotions, as she writes with searing power and acuity about her life situated in a world shaped by race, gender, size. Her essay on Beyoncé's song 'Freedom', entitled 'Dear White Sister,' is one of the most powerful expressions of cultural (mis)appropriation I've read; I can't wait for the British readers to encounter her exceptional voice.”
