Philip Jones has been promoted to be editor of The Bookseller. Jones, deputy editor and also editor of Futurebook—The Bookseller Group’s digital blog—succeeds editor-in-chief Neill Denny.
Denny, who has been editor-in-chief since October 2004, is leaving to follow new opportunities but will remain an integral part of The Bookseller’s editorial team. In September, he starts a new column for The Bookseller looking at how the retail landscape has changed, and he will continue to interview authors in his particular areas of enthusiasm, such as history and economics. Denny said: “Editing The Bookseller has been a wonderful experience and I have loved commenting on and observing the book trade. I am just coming to eight years in the role, so now feels like a good time to move on to new challenges in journalism.” He is contactable on neill.denny@btinternet.com.
Speaking about Denny’s tenure, Nigel Roby, managing director and owner of The Bookseller Group, said: “Neill’s contribution has been outstanding. I think back particularly to the 150th anniversary and the way in which he reflected the heritage of The Bookseller, while championing its role in a fast-moving book trade. His news sense is second to none and his leader columns have always shown a deft touch and sense of balance.”
The change in editorial leadership comes at a time of great movement in the book trade. Roby said: “What The Bookseller covers has changed dramatically. A few years ago it was a straightforward mix of news and features on companies and business models that had barely changed for 30 years.
“Now we report on companies that didn’t even exist then and we do so through print, web and new media. Philip has been at the heart of how we have changed our own business, while also being a recognised authority on the revolution in the book trade. I am delighted he is taking on the editorship.”
