David Walliams' The World's Worst Teachers (HarperCollins) has reigned atop the UK Official Top 50 for a sixth consecutive week, selling 20,553 copies for £154,839 through Nielsen BookScan's TCM. The title, now at a whisker under 300,000 copies sold in total, is now level with the comedian-turned-author's second-longest run in the top spot, achieved by Awful Auntie in 2014. Only 2016's The Midnight Gang has spent longer in the number one, and The World's Worst Teachers is now just a fortnight away from defeating it.
Frederick Forsyth's The Fox (Corgi) jumped to second place, increasing 77% in volume week on week. It becomes the author's joint-highest ranking title in the BookScan era, and scores his first ever Mass Market Fiction number one, leapfrogging John Grisham's The Reckoning (Hodder). Peter May's The Man With No Face (Riverrun) and Lesley Kara's The Rumour (Corgi) also bounced into the overall top 10 in their second week on sale, along with Richard and Judy Book Club picks Peter James' Absolute Proof (Macmillan) and Susan Lewis' One Minute Later (HarperCollins). Anstey Harris' The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton (S&S), also a Richard and Judy choice, made its debut in the Top 50 in 38th place.
Gill Sims' Why Mummy Doesn't Give a ****! (HarperCollins) boomeranged back into the Original Fiction top spot, displacing Jo Nesbo's Knife (Harvill Secker).
Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt (Picador) ended the three-week run of Jason Fox's Battle Scars (Corgi) in Paperback Non-Fiction. The junior doctor memoir notched up its 40th week in the category top spot, returning for the first time since the end of May. At this rate, the original will only be knocked from the chart by its own Christmas-themed sequel, out in October.
Though Walliams and illustrator Tony Ross scored their 151st Children's number one, Dumbo: Circus of Dreams (Centum) flapped straight into the Children's Non-Fiction number one, hitting 17th place in the Top 50 overall. In the Pre-School chart, a resurgent Wonky Donkey (Scholastic) hurdled over Kes Gray and Jim Field's Oi Duck-Billed Platypus (Hachette Children's) for the number one. Craig Smith and Katz Cowley's picture book has shifted over 360,000 copies since its release last autumn.
The print market bounced upwards 4.2% in volume and 5.2% in value week on week, after the heatwave caused a drop in sales the previous week.
