Haico Kaashoek has been promoted to literary agent at Sebes & Bisseling UK, where he will begin building his own list.
Kaashoek joined the agency in the run-up to its opening in 2022, after having worked in the foreign rights department at Amsterdam-based publishing house De Bezige Bij. He also works as a Dutch-to-English literary translator.
In his new role, Kaashoek will continue to work in collaboration with Paul Sebes and Rik Kleuver, who are based in Amsterdam but also manage the Stockholm and London branches.
Sebes established what is now Sebes & Bisseling Literary Agency in Amsterdam 25 years ago. Willem Bisseling, who has worked there for 15 years, became co-owner in 2016. With 20 people working in three countries, the agency states it currently makes around 1,800 deals a year.
The UK branch, which was launched in January 2022 in response to the agency receiving a higher volume of fiction written in English, deals exclusively with English-language manuscripts and focuses largely on upmarket non-fiction and literary fiction.
Kaashoek said: “I am delighted to be taking this next step in my publishing career and thankful for the opportunity to seek out and nurture exciting new voices and to connect them with a wide range of readers.”
Sebes said: “I know Haico to be a friendly, hard-working colleague with an outstanding taste in books. We hope he will draw many British and other writers working in English who we can sell around the world.” Kaashoek can be contacted on kaashoek@sebes.nl.
