Beyond the Book, a new literature festival founded by author David Fennell, will take place this spring at the Friends Meeting House in Brighton, on 6th April 2024.
Kathy Lette will headline the festival, which features a programme curated by local authors Erin Young, S J Watson, Araminta Hall, Graham Bartlett and Lizzie Enfield. Exclusive copies of Lette’s new book, The Revenge Club (House of Zeus), will be available to ticket-holders.
The festival will spotlight other local authors such as Dorothy Koomson, Frances Quinn, S J Watson, as well as performance poet John McCullough.
Sponsored by Moshimo and Goldsboro Books, the festival aims to connect readers with writers, and to "enhance the role of reading and writing in Brighton and Hove", and to celebrate the city’s existing cultural landscape.
“As a team of local authors we believe in the power of books and storytelling to bring communities together, to foster connections and increase and nurture cultural growth," Fennell said. "We will ensure that Brighton authors are celebrated alongside other leading figures of the literary world from across the country.”
The festival includes a book-related historical panel and a true crime panel with ex-policemen turned authors. Also on the billing is a panel asking "what is women’s fiction?"
Moreover, there will be a panel with agents and publishers, aimed at authors who are new to the industry.
Author and board member Hall commented: "It has been said that Brighton has more writers than seagulls. Such a vibrant, literary town deserves a cracking festival celebrating local and international talent."
Bartlett added: “Beyond the Book is the literary festival Brighton has long deserved. Crammed with familiar and new authors across many genres and a publishing panel which lifts the lid on a book’s journey from laptop to the high street, this event is like no other. If you love books, you’ll adore learning what lies beyond them.”
