The Dublin Literary Award longlist has been revealed, with Irish authors Claire Keegan, Catherine Ryan Howard and Colm Tóibín all in the running for the €100,000 (£87,800) prize.
Rooney Prize-winning Keegan is up for her novel Small Things Like These (Faber & Faber), as is Howard’s 56 days (Corvus. Tóibín – who previously won the Dublin Literary Award in 2006 – has been nominated for The Magician (Viking).
Seven further UK authors have made the 70-strong longlist, including Sarah Hall for Burntcoat (Faber), Graeme Macrae Burnet for Case Study (Saraband), Monica Ali for Love Marriage (Scribner), Emma Musty for The Bones of Barry Knight (Legend Press), Anna Mazzola for The Clockwork Girl (Canongate), Elif Shafak for The Island of Missing Trees (Viking) and Douglas Stuart for Young Mungo (Picador).
The longlist also features 29 novels in translation, with works nominated by 84 libraries from 31 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, the US, Canada, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. In total, 14 are debut novels. If the winning book has been translated, the author receives €75,000 and the translator receives €25,000.
Major names from around the world include Geetanjali Shree’s, for her International Booker Prize-winning Tomb of Sand (Tilted Axis Press), translated by Daisy Rockwell and Giller Prize-winning Omar El-Akkad, for his novel What Strange Paradise (Alfred A. Knopf).
The shortlist will be unveiled on 28th March and the winner will be announced by Lord Mayor of Dublin, councillor Caroline Conroy, on 25th May 2023, as part of the International Literature Festival Dublin.
