Granta’s acting publishing director Bella Lacey has been given the role permanently, one in a string of promotions at the firm.
Lacey was promoted to editorial director in 2012 and became acting publishing director since July 2018. She has developed a list of acclaimed books from authors including Madeleine Thien, Lisa Halliday, Carys Davies, Madeleine Bunting, Diana Athill and Barbara Demick.
She said: “I am immensely excited to have this opportunity to lead Granta into the future. Our books, our culture, and our passion for independent publishing are second to none, and our expert and experienced team are capable of great things. Together we will continue Granta’s enviable tradition of first-rate literary publishing, building our remarkable list and nurturing new talent.”
Laura Barber, previously editorial director of Granta and publishing director of Portobello Books, has now been promoted to deputy publishing director of Granta Books.
Rachael Allen, author of poetry collection Kingdomland and poetry editor of Granta magazine, is promoted to poetry editor of Granta Books and magazine. She will create a curated poetry list for Granta Books with first title, Will Harris’s Rendang, published in February 2020.
Other recent promotions include Anne Meadows, who is now senior commissioning editor. A new commercial director to support Lacey in operations and management is being recruited in the next few months.
Sigrid Rausing, publisher of Granta, said: “We took the time we needed to think about the changes we wanted to make, and I am glad we did—Bella has done a brilliant job as acting publishing director since last summer, and we now have an inspired and solid team leading the company. I look forward to starting the search for a commercial director.”
