A third branch of small remainder bookshop chain The Last Bookshop has opened today [Monday] in Bristol.
The opening follows the announcement last week that Foyles was opening a branch in the city in March. The chain has two other branches in Oxford.
The store, which stocks material ranging from children’s literature to art and craft books is located on Park Street, two miles away from Foyles’ planned Bristol branch in Cabot Circus.
Owners Jake Pumphrey and Nick Walsh said: "We chose the name for the first Oxford shop as a tongue-in-cheek rebuke to those who thought books would become obsolete with the rise of the internet – our logo is a book in flames."
They said they chose the city as the site for expansion because it has a large student population and high visitor numbers. Pumphrey added: “It is a time of huge change for the industry and printing certain genres may not remain a viable option for publishers. Nevertheless, we believe that there will always be a market for printed books, just a smaller one."
