Online children’s retailer Books2Door has donated more than 1,000 books to child refugees from Afghanistan who have recently arrived in Leicester.
The retailer, which is based in Leicester, liaised with the city council's Supporting Tenants & Residents service, which works with vulnerable people in the city. A selection of titles that support the education of toddlers and primary school-aged children were donated, with the range including activity-based non-fiction books for those aged between five and nine years old, in addition to "touchy-feely" titles for younger readers.
Each child will also receive a special 10-book Christmas collection, which has been wrapped by the book company.
“Our ethos is to support children by making books accessible and we want every child to have something to open on Christmas Day," said Abdul Thadha (pictured), founder of Books2Door and m.d. of Leicester-based press Sweet Cherry.
"It has been our honour to donate these books to children from Afghanistan as a token to help them settle into the county and of course, the city of Leicester. As a bookseller, we are opening our hearts and giving children the gift of reading.”
Books2Door also donated 1,000 books to Gaza’s largest bookshop, which was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike in June, and gifted 15,000 titles for World Book Day this year.
