Little, Brown Book Group is celebrating 15 years of its design student outreach initiatives, which focus on “nurturing upcoming designers and bridging the gap between industry and education”.
With a programme that incorporates internships, lectures, workshops, and live projects set for design courses at universities, the team has long-standing relationships with Norwich University for the Arts and Manchester Metropolitan University setting book cover projects, and has recently built new relationships with Falmouth University and Liverpool John Moores University.
Last year’s 2022 cohort of Ella Garrett, Toby James, Megan Shepherd and Daisy Woods, have all secured design jobs in publishing within a year of completing the internship.
Now, the design team at Little, Brown is welcoming aspiring book cover designers aged 18 or over for a series of internships from April 2023. Those interested are encouraged to email designinternship@littlebrown.co.uk with a PDF of work to be considered.
David Shelley, chief executive officer of Hachette UK, said: “I am really proud of the work the Little, Brown team has done over the past 15 years on the student outreach programme. They have helped to nurture some of the most creative and talented designers in the publishing industry and I’m excited about seeing the work of the emerging designers who they will work with in 2023 and beyond.”
Charlie King, managing director of Little, Brown Book Group, added: “Everyone at Little, Brown is incredibly proud of the work our design department has done over the past 15 years to make the industry more accessible for new design talent. From their work in schools and universities to their long-running internship programme, designers at L,B have always placed diversity, inclusion and outreach work at the very heart of what they do; it’s an inspiration to us all, and makes a very significant contribution to Hachette’s Changing the Story mission."
Duncan Spilling, creative director of Little, Brown Book Group, championed the need for such schemes, saying: "Design talent can emerge from so many places and we endeavour to encourage its growth and champion its much needed support. To see individuals flourish and be given opportunities to share and demonstrate their skills is such a worthwhile and amazing experience for all involved. Our reach, support and opportunities are something we’re continually looking to expand on – so we can offer experiences and help to all our future creative contributors within design.”
