Gabby Logan, Ugo Monye and Caroline Hirons are among the judges for this year’s British Book Awards.
Run by The Bookseller, The British Book Awards (a.k.a. the Nibbies) are a highlight of the literary calendar, and will take place in central London on 23rd May alongside a live-streamed element so that guests across the UK and Ireland can celebrate remotely. The deadline for submissions is 3rd February, with the shortlists to be announced in March.
Other famous faces on the judging panels include celebrated authors, illustrators, journalists and trade professionals including Mike Gayle, Irenosen Okojie, Ruth Ware, Cressida Cowell, Fi Glover, Joy Francis, Alex Fane, and many more.
New for 2022 is the Discover Book of the Year award, which will focus on underrepresented voices. Audiobook of the Year has been split into two awards (Fiction, Non-Fiction), and there are now three rather than two Children’s Books of the Year: Illustrated, Non-Fiction and Fiction.
Further confirmed celebrity judges across the 2022 awards include barrister, writer and broadcaster Rob Rinder (Pageturner of the Year); author Dreda Say Mitchell (Crime & Thriller Book of the Year); author and podcast creator Giovanna Fletcher (Audiobook: Non-Fiction); doctors and broadcasters Chris and Xand van Tulleken (Children’s Non-Fiction); poet, author and speaker Lemn Sissay (Children’s Illustrated); and writer and actor Obioma Ugoala (Discover).
Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller and chair of the judges at the British Book Awards, said: “We are delighted by the range and profile of our judges this year, which once again show the importance of these awards and their centrality to the book trade. We look forward to engaging with the judges on their respective panels and amplifying the trade’s good work across another strong year for books.”
The 2021 winners included Douglas Stuart, who took the overall Book of the Year Award for his debut novel Shuggie Bain (Picador), which also won the Fiction: Debut Book of the Year, and Richard Osman, who was awarded Author of the Year, in recognition of The Thursday Murder Club (Viking) being the fastest-selling novel since 2012.
