Charing Cross Foyles’ lead fiction bookseller Gary Michael Perry has been appointed marketing executive at independent publisher And Other Stories.
Perry started his bookselling career at a small independent bookshop in Worthing, West Sussex, before heading to London for study, joining Foyles on Charing Cross Road in 2011. Until recently, he led the fiction department at the branch, growing the presence of translation, indie presses and LGBTQ Fiction. He has also been on the advisory board for New Books in German and PEN Translates, and judged the Peirene Stevns, Republic of Consciousness and Harvill Secker Young Translator prizes.
Perry said: "And Other Stories’ titles have played a huge part in my career as a bookseller and it’s a dream come true to be part of such a wonderful team."
Publisher Stefan Tobler added: "I first met Gary on the front desk in the old Foyles shop and in the 13 or so years since And Other Stories has had the honour of Gary following and loving our publishing (including raving about so many of our titles on his social media, most recently Mari’s Verdigris) in his widely acknowledged unofficial role on Twitter and Instagram as head bookseller for translated and LGBTQ fiction.
"We cannot believe our luck and can’t wait for all the good book conversations to come, on social media and just in the team. We will try our best not to publish only translations from Portuguese in future."
