Luke Brown and Leonora Craig Cohen are leaving Serpent’s Tail, and the list will be run by Profile Books publisher Rowan Cope with support from Mehar Anaokar while a new editorial lead is recruited.
"Luke and Leonora are lovely colleagues and smart, thoughtful editors who have published a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction during their time here," Cope said. "We’ll miss them very much. They are both also talented writers themselves and we look forward to reading their new work. Their books and authors are in safe hands while we look towards an exciting future for Serpent’s Tail and Tuskar Rock."
Brown worked for Serpent’s Tail from the start of 2020, commissioning and publishing books from authors including Camille Bordas, Adelle Waldman, M John Harrison and Gurnaik Johal, as well as Pola Oloixarac, Joy Williams, Julianne Pachico and Atticus Lish. He has been the acting publishing director since last year, and combined this work with teaching at the University of Manchester and publishing his own fiction.
Meanwhile, Cohen joined as an assistant in 2017 and rose to commissioning editor, and has published authors including Torrey Peters, Sarai Walker, Nadia Attia and Gianni Washington, as well as Kate Collins and Victoria Gosling. She expanded the classics list with authors like June Jordan, Tezer Özlü and Dennis Cooper. Her début novel The Decadence is forthcoming from Sceptre Books next autumn.
Brown will leave on 23rd July and Cohen on 29th July, and they can be contacted at lukebrown1979@gmail.com and leonoracraigcohen@protonmail.com, respectively.
