Michael Magee’s Close to Home (Hamish Hamilton) has been announced as the Waterstones Irish Book of the Year 2023.
The award champions books from authors who are either based in Ireland or whose books have a strong connection to it.
The winning book, which was also shortlisted for The Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize 2023, tells the story of two working-class brothers in post-conflict Belfast. It is described as "a stunning portrait of modern masculinity, working-class youth, and trauma".
Susan Salters from Waterstones Belfast said: “Close to Home was the unanimous choice for Irish Book of the Year by all the booksellers in Ireland, north and south. It’s a beautifully written, honest, witty and moving debut novel with vivid characterisations, not least the loveable rogue of a protagonist.
"It’s also a brilliant snapshot of a post-conflict city undergoing massive changes. I’ve lived in Belfast for most of my life and it’s made me look at my home city afresh. It’s a novel that stays with you long after you’ve read it.”
Neill Walker from Waterstones Coleraine added: “Close to Home crackles and fizzes with authentic working-class Belfast dialogue.”
Magee commented: “I’m thrilled that Close to Home has been named Waterstones Irish Book of the Year. It’s such an honour, and to have the support of Waterstones is really special. Huge thanks to the booksellers and buyers, and all the Waterstones staff. It means the world.”
