Author Margaret Thomson Davis dies

Author Margaret Thomson Davis has died after a short illness.

Born in Bathgate but raised in Glasgow, Davis was a children’s and Red Cross nurse who had written for many years before her first novel, The Breadmakers Saga (Black and White Publishing), was published in 1972. She has since published more than 20 novels. Still in print, The Breadmakers was described in the Daily Express as a "Glaswegian Coronation Street".

Two of her novels have been adapted for the stage, The Breadmakers Saga and Rag Woman, Rich Woman (Century).

Davis was awarded, on behalf of the citizens of Glasgow, the Lord Provost’s award for literature and for "bringing Glasgow’s history to vibrant life".

Campbell Brown, m.d. of Black & White Publishing, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret Thomson Davis. She'll be hugely missed by all of us. Her Glasgow sagas like The Breadmakers live on, still loved by her loyal readers."
