Emma Martinez Guppy is to join Simon & Schuster next month, taking up the newly created role of head of children’s rights, as the company expands in that area.
Currently head of children’s rights at Welbeck, Martinez Guppy has worked for a number of publishers in foreign rights for more than 15 years, including at Quarto, Hachette and HarperCollins, and previously held a maternity cover position as deputy rights director at S&S. In her new role, which commences in June, she will oversee the expansion of children’s rights sales, reporting to group rights director Maud Sepult.
Rachel Denwood, m.d. of the children’s division, said: “Simon & Schuster has long been a co-edition powerhouse and as a result of our growing reputation as a hit-making children’s and YA fiction publisher we are now seeing very exciting growth in our rights sales. It is the perfect time to bring even more focus to this area of the business.”
Martinez Guppy said: “It has been great to work with the excellent team at Welbeck on the growing children’s list, which is going from strength to strength. But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to return to Simon & Schuster. Rachel’s commercial sense and editorial choices are legendary. And I am delighted to join Maud, and the brilliant children’s team there and to represent the stellar list. From the beautiful picture books to the very exciting fiction acquisitions, I am excited to start.”
Sepult added: “I am delighted that we have created this new role in our thriving rights team. And I am thrilled Emma is joining us. Few people have her knowledge and expertise across both picture books and fiction and I can’t wait for her to start. Having worked with Emma in the past, I know that in addition to being an exceptional rights professional, she’s also the best colleague to work with and a strong team player.”
