Moira Scicluna Zahra, illustrator-in-residence at Edinburgh College of Art School of Design, has won this year’s Kelpies Illustration Prize.
Every year, organiser Floris Books asks illustrators or designers from Scotland to create a front cover for one of its books. This year entrants were challenged to design a cover for Soldier’s Game by James Killgore to commemorate the centenary of the First World War armistice.
Floris said Scicluna Zahra impressed the judges with her “striking and sensitive representation of the protagonists, the skilful illustration of First World War motifs, and a well-considered design that would really appeal to the book’s 8-12 year old readership” (see picture below).
Scicluna Zahra will receive a £250 cash prize and a portfolio review at London Book Fair, thanks to a partnership with Advocate Art.
Edinburgh College student Ruyana Ruzgar won a prize for “highly commended design”, and Laura Villarreal received the people’s choice award, which is voted for by members of the public. Each was given a £75 cash prize.
